Jitterbit is seeking a Java Backend Software Engineer to join our Engineer team. Jitterbit is an iPaaS (Integration Platform as a Service) and API Management platform that has been recognized in the leader quadrant of Gartner for five straight years. Our customers use our iPaaS and API Manager platform to solve mission-critical business problems. What is our challenge? To make it easy to integrate our customers’ systems. In order to do this, we need to build and create a SaaS offering that is reliable, stable, and scalable for our customers. Do you have the design, architecting, and code-writing capabilities to take on this challenge? And can succeed in a big way?
About the Team
The engineering team at Jitterbit believes that the quality of our code reflects directly on us as professionals. We are relentless about crafting a product that is innovative and delivers a memorable user experience; an experience that is fast and robust. As a key engineer on our team, you will collaborate with other engineers, product management, and operations.
Our culture is fun, fast-paced, performance-oriented, open, and collegial. We are constantly pushing the technology envelope to the edge! We are very distributed and our culture is set up to make all of us very effective working remotely. We believe in hiring talent where it exists.
Key team values:
Quality-first mindset: We believe code quality directly reflects on us as professionals
Distributed ownership: Engineers own their subsystems end-to-end, from design to production support
Innovation mindset: We constantly explore new technologies and architectural patterns to stay ahead
About the Job
As a Java Backend Software Engineer, you will join our team to design, architect, and implement robust, scalable distributed systems that power our SaaS platform. This role offers significant technical depth and opportunities for engineers ready to grow into more senior responsibilities.
Key Responsibilities:
Design and implement high-performance, fault-tolerant connector integrations and adapters that reliably handle mission-critical business workflows 24x7x365.
Architect distributed microservices following cloud-native design patterns (circuit breakers, bulkheads, observability, etc.) for multi-tenant SaaS environments.
Build and optimize data pipelines handling multiple protocols (REST, SOAP, GraphQL, gRPC, webhooks) and communication patterns (synchronous, asynchronous, event-driven).
Drive technical decisions on critical subsystems; contribute to RFCs and architectural reviews; mentor junior engineers on system design principles.
Implement comprehensive monitoring, logging, and tracing; own the operational health and observability of deployed systems.
Collaborate with Product, DevOps, and SRE teams to deliver features, resolve production incidents, and improve platform reliability.
Champion best practices: code reviews, testing strategies (unit, integration, chaos), security hardening, and performance optimization.
Contribute to platform infrastructure and developer experience initiatives that benefit the entire engineering organization.
About You
You are an engineer who can turn ideas into extremely reliable and scalable designs. You code in such a way that other engineers find your code easy to comprehend, modify, and build upon. You believe in the power of Integration and APIs to transform how systems are integrated and how applications are built.
You will be successful in this role if you:
Enjoy helping and mentoring others around you as you grow and become a successful engineer and developer.
Have excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Are capable of working in a distributed team and able to excel in a remote culture.
Are self-driven and able to work on key initiatives.
Take pleasure in making things happen and listen to the input from peers.
Are able to make data-driven decisions.
Are a believer in the best idea strategy regardless of where or who ideas come from.
Are an accountability engineer in the team and passionate about making people succeed through the code you push.
We are looking for:
7+ years designing and building large-scale, distributed backend systems handling high throughput and low latency requirements.
5+ years working with multi-tenant SaaS architectures in production; deep understanding of isolation, rate-limiting, and resource management across tenants.
Proven ability to drive system design and participate in architectural decisions; experience mentoring engineers on design patterns and best practices.
Strong problem-solving and debugging skills; demonstrated ability to diagnose complex, production issues in distributed systems.
Deep experience with microservices architecture, including service decomposition, API design, and inter-service communication patterns.
Hands-on experience with cloud platforms (AWS, Google Cloud, or Azure); familiarity with container orchestration (Kubernetes) and serverless patterns.
Strong foundation in software engineering fundamentals: SOLID principles, design patterns, system design, testing strategies (unit, integration, e2e).
Protocol expertise: REST, SOAP, GraphQL, gRPC, and related concepts (HTTP semantics, caching, rate limiting, error handling).
Message brokers & event streaming: Hands-on experience with RabbitMQ, Apache Kafka, AWS SQS/SNS, or similar; understanding of at-least-once delivery, dead-letter queues, and stream processing.
Database technologies: Strong SQL (query optimization, indexing); experience with NoSQL databases (MongoDB, DynamoDB, Cassandra) and their consistency trade-offs.
Containerization & orchestration: Proficiency with Docker; practical experience with Kubernetes or container runtimes in production.
Version control: Advanced Git workflows (branching strategies, rebasing, cherry-picking); experience with GitHub or similar platforms.
CI/CD & DevOps: Working knowledge of GitHub Actions, Jenkins, ArgoCD, or similar; ability to write build pipelines, deployment scripts, and infrastructure-as-code (Terraform, CloudFormation).
OS & systems: Comfortable with Linux command line; understanding of OS-level concepts (memory allocation, processes, file systems, networking).
Observability: Experience with logging (ELK, Splunk), metrics (Prometheus, Grafana), and distributed tracing (Jaeger, Zipkin).
What You’ll Get:
Work for a growing leader within the Integration Platform as a Service (iPaaS) tech space
Join a mission-driven company that is transforming the industry by changing the way customers use API creation within business-critical processes.
Career development and mentorship
A flexible, remote-friendly company with personality and heart
